This weekend features the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon, Dragon Festival, World Cup Finals and so much more.
Saturday:
Lifetime Fitness Triathlon: If you have a child (or adult) in your house who wishes they could be at the Tour de France, this might be the next best thing. Observe the swim, bike or run and inspire your whole family to get fit. This event takes place at Lake Nokomis and along the Minnehaha Parkway.
Dragon Festival at Lake Phalen Park in St. Paul: This cultural, family friendly event features dragon boat racing, dance performances, martial arts demonstrations, crafts, and free canoe rides with Wilderness Inquiry. The fun starts at 10:00 and goes until 5:00.
Mill City Farmers Market: Girls at the Grill this weekend. Join female chefs from the Twin Cities as the fire up the grill at the market. The Gale Woods Farm animals will be at the market again all morning, and James Samuel “Cornbread Harris will perform from 11:00-1:00.
Author Meet and Greet and Craft Project at Creative Kidstuff: Meet the author of Princess Tea and make a tea party hat. Your little princess can check out this event at 10:00 at the Maple Grove Location or 2:00 at the Grand Ave. store. (Friday at 2:00 at the shops at West End.)
Publication Party for The Princess and Her Panter at the Red Balloon Bookshop. Meet both the author and illustrator of this book and enjoy a slice of cake.
From 1:00 to 3:00, enjoy Weekend with the Weisguides at the Weisman Art Museum. Enjoy special family art activities and tours from the experts!
Passport to Korea at the Mall of America: From 12:00-5:30, explore Korean culture through music and performances.
Dora’s fiesta at Nickolodeon Universe (Mall of America): Technically there is some free stuff to do at this party (mariachi band, piñata, paper flowers) but I have a hard time imagining how to get out of there without spending money on rides. If you do decide to purchase tickets, the first 500 ticket purchasers get a free sombrero.
Free Family Flicks at the Mall of America: This week see Big Fat Liar for free with the whole family. Movies start at 10:00 but space is limited to first come, first serve. If it is super important to you to get in, plan to arrive a little early.
Craft Project at the Lakeshore Learning Store: This week make a “Summer Memory Keeper” (a hanging folder for your child to store keepsakes from the summer) from 11:00-3:00.
Sommerfest Concert at Peavey Plaza: From 6:00-7:45 enjoy a performance by the Chris Morrissey Trio and from 9:45-11:30, the Minneapolis Dub Ensemble performs. These performances bookend the indoor concerts at Orchestra Hall.
Movies in the Park: The Outsiders at Lake Calhoun (south beach) at sunset, or around 9:00.
Sunday:
If you’re into the World Cup, you may not be interested in much else going on on Sunday, other than the Spain vs. Netherlands final game. But you may be interested in finding a few places to watch the game with other crazy fans like you. The Riverview Theater and Midtown Global Market will show the game at 1:30. Of course there are tons of bars showing the game as well, but these are places I think you could pretty safely take the whole family to see the game without expecting problems.
Target Family Day at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts: From 11:00-5:00, the museum is open, free, and focused on families. This month’s theme is Art Play. Create a sculpture out of toys, try latin and hip hop dancing, and enjoy experiments from the Science Museum.
Family Festival at Centennial Lakes Park: From 10:00-2:00, you can catch performances from kid favorites Will Hale and the Tadpole Parade, Bob the Beachcomber, and the Brodini Magic Show. In between the shows, enjoy craft projects, face painting, and a wild animal exhibit.
Dragon Festival at Lake Phalen Park in St. Paul: This cultural, family friendly event features dragon boat racing, dance performances, martial arts demonstrations, crafts, and free canoe rides with Wilderness Inquiry. The fun starts at 10:00 and goes until 5:00.
Passport to Korea at the Mall of America: From 12:00-5:00, explore Korean culture through music and performances.
From 1:00 to 3:00, enjoy Weekend with the Weisguides at the Weisman Art Museum. Enjoy special family art activities and tours from the experts!
Sommerfest Concert at Peavey Plaza: From 5:00-7:30 enjoy a free performance by Gypsy Mania Hot Club outdoors before the indoor concert at Orchestra Hall.
Improv at the Park continues this Sunday at Minnehaha Falls Park at 5:00 and 7:00 pm. Stevie Rays Improv Group offers these free family friendly show each Sunday during the summer.
While there are not any movies at the park on Sunday night, there are two music performance options at the Lake Harriet Bandshell at 2:00 and 5:30 pm. At 2:00 catch the Classic Big Band and the Nostalgics, then at 5:30 see the Minneapolis Pops Orchestra.
Free day at the Bell Museum of Natural History from 12:00-5:00.
